SEAMEO SPAFA extends our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Victor Joaquin Paz, esteemed Filipino archaeologist, who passed away at the age of 57 on Saturday, 7 September 2024. Paz was the Director of the University of the Philippines Archaeological Studies Program (now the School of Archaeology) from 2002 to 2012. He was also the founding editor of Hukay: Journal of Southeast Asia and Pacific Archaeology. Notably, Paz led two of the Philippines’ longest continuous archaeological research projects: the Palawan Island Palaeohistoric Research Project and the Catanauan Archaeological and Heritage Project. His work was marked by a commitment to public archaeology and heritage consciousness, fostering genuine connections with local communities. To SEAMEO SPAFA, he played the important role as a member of the academic committee for the inaugural SEAMEO SPAFA International Conference on Southeast Asian Archaeology in 2013. He will be remembered through his legacy in archaeology.
